Experimenting with agents in a grid UI — an Azure AI Foundry Labs Original prototype

We’re thrilled about bringing AI into the flow of work in Excel with =COPILOT . The grid UI is definitely where much of the world’s most valuable computational work happens. As we look ahead to an agentic future, Azure AI Foundry Labs shares a simple, open experiment that illustrates how agent workflows might live in a grid-like surface. Note that Project CalcLM: Agent Grid is a prototype. Not a product.

What’s cool about it?

• Formula first! Express simple agent steps as formulas, reference cells to chain tasks, and watch outputs flow across the grid.

• A minimal surface that invites quick experimentation as a proof-of-concept to quickly compose simple agent workflows.

• Uses Azure OpenAI GPT-4.1 Foundry Models

• Content Safety filters built-in for Trustworthy AI

• Provide optional files on the grid or with an agent for grounding
